J.J. Abrams Might Direct NBC Spy Drama Undercovers

n the wake of his Star Trek hit, director-producer J.J. Abrams has a ton of TV and film fodder in the pipeline, including a new prime-time spy drama. If he can find time between 11 other projects, Abrams plans to direct the pilot episode of NBC’s upcoming Undercovers.

Abrams earlier directed the legendarily expense Lost pilot episode, which launched his movie career. Undercovers offers a Mr. & Mrs. Smith-meets-The Bourne Identity concept, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A nearly identical premise failed to find traction last year when My Own Worst Enemy tanked on NBC. The short-lived series cast Christian Slater as an amnesiac spy living a double life in the suburbs.

Network execs have reason to be optimistic if Abrams takes the helm. As creator of TV’s Alias and director of Mission: Impossible III, he clearly brings a steady hand to the high-tech spy genre.
